Salt Lake City, Utah, June 118, 2025  – EnergySolutions, as part of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Test Bed Initiative demonstration, is pleased to announce the safe, compliant and successful solidification and permanent disposal of 1,000 gallons of liquid mixed low-level waste (MLLW) from the Hanford Site. The waste was received at EnergySolutions’ Clive Disposal Facility in Utah’s west desert on April 25, 2025. Leveraging decades of expertise in radioactive waste management, EnergySolutions conducted confirmatory sampling, followed by stabilization and solidification, with final disposal completed on May 29, 2025.

The safe transportation of solid and liquid MLLW is a highly regulated practice which is routinely undertaken across the nuclear industry nationwide. Across the country, hundreds of thousands of MLLW gallons are transported annually in accordance with U.S. Department of Transportation regulations. EnergySolutions, supported by its own rail and trucking services, has safely transported MLLW and low-level waste for more than thirty years.

“We appreciate the trust placed in us by the U.S. Department of Energy to safely manage, solidify and dispose of this Cold War-era legacy waste stream,” said Ken Robuck, President and CEO of EnergySolutions. “It is deeply gratifying to contribute to the environmental cleanup of the Hanford tank waste. I commend DOE on its Test Bed Initiative and our Clive team for their outstanding performance in successfully executing this work and for their commitment to safety and operational excellence.”

For this DOE demonstration, EnergySolutions managed every aspect of the process: receiving the waste from the DOE Hanford Site, conducting detailed confirmatory sampling of the waste, formulating a project-specific grout treatment, and verifying post-treatment compliance with all regulations. Following solidification, EnergySolutions submitted samples to an independent certified laboratory to verify compliance with applicable U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
hazardous waste standards. Upon confirmation, EnergySolutions safely disposed of the waste in Clive’s permitted mixed-waste landfill cell.

This shipment served as a demonstration of the feasibility of direct shipping liquid MLLW waste volumes and successfully treating and disposing of the waste in commercial facilities. The Hanford Site currently holds approximately 56 million gallons of tank waste, of which the low activity mixed liquid waste require treatment and disposal. EnergySolutions stands ready to support the DOEs future Hanford tank farm initiatives.
