EnergySolutions Moab Tailings

Atlas Mills Tailings Removal and Disposition

EnergySolutions has been awarded the U.S. Department of Energy’s Atlas Mill Tailings project. The $98.4 million contract is a three-year contract. The goal of the project is to safely remove 15 million cubic yards of radioactive material located on the banks of the Colorado River near Moab, Utah. The site encompasses approximately 435 acres, of which 130 acres contain uranium mill tailings. The mill tailings will be hauled and disposed of at a disposal facility 30 miles north of Moab designed specifically for this project.

"Today’s announcement shows that through hard work and cooperative efforts, great progress can be made. This decision demonstrates our commitment to fulfilling our Cold War cleanup obligations as well as preserving the long-term environmental health of the Colorado river and the many communities it serves."
