EnergySolutions in Illinois

In September 2010 Exelon Nuclear transferred its license for the Zion nuclear power station to ZionSolutions, a wholly owned subsidiary of EnergySolutions. This began EnergySolutions’ accelerated decommissioning of the Zion Station. Over the next 10 years EnergySolutions will decommission the plant and restore the land to its original state. This revolutionary concept of license stewardship is considered a model for future decommissioning projects. Through this program, clean up of the plant will be accelerated by at least 12 years. Nearly 200 ZionSolutions employees are currently involved in the decommissioning process.

Giving and Volunteerism

ZionSolutions values the partnerships we have with the organizations in our community. In the past few years we have donated to the police and fire departments, the Sunrise Rotary Club, the Zion Area Chamber of Commerce of Lake County, and the Black Chamber of Commerce of Lake County.

Our employees have provided support to local organizations by sponsoring collection drives and providing financial assistance. We organized a towel drive for Love INC of Lake County and a coat drive for Alyssa’s Angels. We also provided toys and financial assistance for the Zion Park District Summer Youth Program. School supplies and financial support have been donated to Zion, Winthrop Harbor and Beak Park School Districts.  This past holiday season employees participated in the Zion Township Elf Program, donated toys to Toys for Tots, and collected canned food to donate to the NorthPoint Church in Winthrop Harbor and to food banks in the Zion and Beach Park areas.

Recently our ZionSolutions employees joined members of the community to clean several different locations along Kellogg Creek. We removed debris, old garbage and cut or removed trees that were blocking the flow of the creek. Organized by the Lake County Stormwater Management Commission, the Zion Park District and the Alliance for the Great Lakes, the clean up helped to improve the water quality in Kellogg Creek. Kellogg Creek is one of the few creeks in the area that flows directly into Lake Michigan.

We are also involved in our community through participation in the Zion Area Chamber of Commerce, the Sunrise Rotary Club, and the Coalition for Healthy Communities.
